Long words and short words

A ten-letter word and a four-letter word are different problems. The long one is easy to see and hard to trace. The short one is easy to trace and hard to see. Here's how to handle each.

Long words

In Spellhunt, listed words run from 4 to 10 letters. The long ones, like TELESCOPE, SANDPAPER or BASKETBALL, are usually the first words experienced players go for, for good reasons.

Why start with them

• A long word covers a lot of the grid, so it crosses many rows or columns. Almost any sweep passes through it.
• It has more distinctive letters and pairs to latch onto. BASKETBALL has a K, a double L and two Bs.
• Once found, it takes a big bite out of the grid, and the letters left over are easier to read.

How to find them

Anchor on the middle, not the start. The first letter of a long word is often common. Look instead for the most unusual letter or pair anywhere in the word, find it on the grid, then read outward in both directions to check the rest.

Use soft focus. Long words are the ones most likely to jump out if you relax your eyes and take in the whole grid. Try it right after reading the list.

Watch the edges. On a 10×10 grid, a 10-letter word has to run the full width, height or diagonal, from one edge to the other. On any grid, the longer the word, the fewer places it can fit. That narrows the search a lot.

Short words

Four-letter words are the ones people most often leave until last. They're so short that the eye passes over them without noticing, and their letters are often common ones.

How to find them

Hunt the rarest letter. In a short word, one unusual letter does all the work. For FLEA, look for the F. For VISAS, the V. Then check its eight neighbors.

Go systematic. For a short word with only common letters, sweep the grid row by row looking for its first two letters side by side, then do the columns and diagonals. It's slower, but it doesn't miss.

Check around found words. Grids are packed tightly, so short words often sit right next to, or across, longer words you've already found.

Remember they can run any way. A four-letter word running backwards on a diagonal is about the hardest thing to see in a word search. If a short word won't appear, it's probably one of those. See diagonal and backwards words.

Words inside words

On some paper puzzles, a short listed word hides inside a longer one: CAT inside CATTLE. Spellhunt's generator doesn't allow that between listed words, so when you find a short word inside a longer listed word, it's a coincidence. It may still be worth swiping, though: any real word of four letters or more that isn't on the list counts as an extra word and earns a few coins.

Word length in boss puzzles

In a boss puzzle, the list shows only blanks and a category. The number of blanks is your biggest clue: seven blanks under "Garden" narrows things down fast. Start with the longest and shortest blanks, since those have the fewest possible answers. The word themes page shows the kind of words each theme uses.
